Join us at Tarquin Studios with record producer and engineer Peter Katis! In this series of ‘Inside the Track’, we trawl through the mix session of eclectic hit song ‘The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness’ by alternative rock band The National. Katis shares his experience of mixing the album in the box at the band’s studio, spending most of the time on this song in particular, facing challenges on musical agreement, and dealing with many changes of content. He gives you an exclusive listen to unreleased alternate versions of the song, as well as a number of recorded parts that were not used in the final mix. He also reveals his processing on individual tracks, groups and the mix buss, while discussing a variety of topics including sibilance, printing analog reverb, mastering, band politics, monitoring, stereo placement, and imaging.
